Planting your acorn
In your hands is an acorn of the English Oak (Quercus robur), one of Britain’s great native hardwoods.
A small beginning, and just one of our our quiet nods to sustainability. In fact, Quercus robur has an extremely high ecological value supporting numerous insect and wildlife species.
If you have a pot, a garden, or a corner of soil, we hope you will plant it and let it take root.
How to plant it
-
Plant soon. Acorns do not like to wait.
-
Use a deep pot (about 20 cm) with compost, or plant straight into the ground (make sure you have the landowners permissions as oak trees can become pretty big!!
-
Push it in 2 to 3 cm deep, cover, and water well.
-
Keep it cool and protected from hard frost while it starts.
-
Keep the soil lightly moist, not soaked.
It will root first, then rise. Bear in mind, Oak is incredibly slow growing and whilst it can reach heights of 30-40m, this may take up to 200 years.
Thank you for helping a native oak find its place.
